Australian Merlot Wine
Merlot is Australia’s third most produced wine grape, with in excess of 90K tonnes produced yearly within Australia. Grown across almost every region of Australia, the Merlot grape is only troubled in very cold vineyards and thrives in hotter regions such as the Murray Valley.
Australia’s best Merlot wine comes from the cooler regions of Australia such as Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, Eden Valley, and Orange. A versitile grape, Merlot plays an important role as both a blend as well as a straight Merlot Wine. A medium bodied wine, Australian Merlot can lack a prominant front and back palate, coupled with Merlot’s fleshy soft nature this makes for exceptional blends, giving major Australian export wine blends a richness and softness and some palate to the Merlot.
In it’s home town of Bordeaux, France the Merlot grape is used to make the world’s best, most expensive and sought after wines. In the past decade, Merlot vineyards have expanded across the globe, especially in Australia, California, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa and South America.
A great early drinking wine, Merlot shows falovors of plum, red currant, mint, game, earth and leather. Due to a low amount of tannins the wine is limited in aging potential.
